You need to use a vapour shipper to ship the semen (also sometimes called a "Dry Shipper"). This type of container is charged up with liquid nitrogen before use, which absorbs into an absorbent material within the container and the is excess poured off prior to use. Vapour shippers will typically keep the shipment at the required minus 196° Celsius for 8-14 days depending upon the model (some can hold longer too). Once you receive the semen, it should be transferred over to a liquid nitrogen storage tank - sometimes called a "Dewar". This is essentially a large vacuum flask that contains liquid nitrogen. The straws are held in "goblets" on a "cane" within a "canister" in the tank if they are small straws (0.25 or 0.5 ml) or are placed directly into the canister if they are the larger "macro" (4 or 5 ml) straws. The amount of time that this type of tank will hold the semen at the required temperature will depend upon the size and type of tank. You can see various models of vapour shippers and tanks on the "sementanks.com" website, where you can also buy them (follow that link). |

I want to start shipping semen internationally. I know that I need permits but do not know where to go or how to get started. Can anyone help me to get pointed in the right direction or find the answers as to where to go first? I also want to import semen into the USA and also know I need to have permits for this. How do I start this as well? Any answers? |

http://www.aphis.usda.gov/regulations/vs/iregs/animals/ will be a good place to start as far as requirements for exporting semen is concerned; and http://www.aphis.usda.gov/import_export/animals/live_animals.shtml for importation. Note that regulations do change, so you will need to be in contact with USDA to confirm the most up to date regulations. |
