Note that the Rhino vaccine required for pregnant mares is the EHV-1 (sub 1) vaccine, not the "regular" Rhino vaccination that is given in the spring each year. The abortion strain of Rhino is only protected against by the use of (in North America) the "Pneumabort-K" and/or "Prodigy" vaccines.

If the mare is in a high-risk situation (boarding barn, frequent show attendee, known exposure to EHV-1 etc) it is recommended that she also receive a vaccination at 3 months of pregnancy.

If the mare is not showing any signs of foaling at 11 months, then she should again receive another EHV-1 vaccination.

This means that a susceptible mare that has a prolonged pregnancy may require vaccination with EHV-1 (abortion strain) vaccine at 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 months of pregnancy for maximal protection.
