Kiss Me Kate:-) I should be picking her up very soon and need to get her to loose weight and get in shape. I have never done the weight loss only the weight gain. I am also going to put her on a dry lot at first.
What I am thinking is to cut her feed in half, or more. grass hay. Start walking her with short trots (lunge line) in the cool mornings, and again in the evening, short sweet lessons to start. She is broke to ride. Once she has started to gain stamina and loose weight, then start short sweet rides.
She a pony, 13.2 hh Welsh/ qh. Not severely overweight but def needs attention :-)
This is the only pic I have right now. When I get her home I will take better pics.

Very cute Holly! Don't know about the weight thingy either, I'm always trying to fatten them up too. I just bought this week a 1/2 Welsh cremello mare...I'm so excited to breed her. I've sent hair off to see if she has the silver gene, her sire does. Her dam is QH/Arabian. I'm giving it one shot to breed this year, as I got a super duper deal on a breeding to a young WB Stallion out of Escapade...first vet ck was yesterday, she had CL, so will ck on Monday to see if she is progressing. Hate breeding this late, but had to get breeding contract in and give it a shot this year, if she does not take, then we can try again next year and still got the intro breeding rate. :-) Can't wait to see more pix of yours..I've got a pix of mine on phone, not real good, but I'll try and upload it later.

Holly, link to her sale page, look for Ci Ci yearling cremello near bottom. She is now 5, but you can at least see what she looked like as a yearling...

Hi Holly

She is sooo cute! I love her face! I think what you've got planned sounds good. Then if she starts loosing too much weight once she is getting more work then gradually add more feed. Feeding is such a guessing game - you have to just try something (keep notes) and see if it works! Sounds like she'll be an easy keeper which is always nice! Send more pictures when you can! Congrats on a beautiful new pony!

Thanks so much... Neighbors asked when is she due! LOL and Hubby told me thats the shortest draft he has ever seen lol.
He likes her though, so far she is getting along fine minus a few spats. When she runs I hear thunder hahaha!!!

She is adorable Holly, I love a bay roan, she looks so much like my large pony mare I lost last year. I'm sure you will have a lot of fun with here.

She was sired by a Section A Welsh and her dam was TB/Trakehner so that adds up to 1/2 welsh 1/4 TB and 1/4 Trakehner. Her baby was by Smoke Tree Silver Dragon who is an imported Section B Welsh, he is palomino roan sabino. The mare was alway quite fat but the baby was born so skinny. When the baby would run it was like she was flying, it was amazing she could stop.

wow great pic! Baby is gorgeous! Mom is BIG didnt appear so in that first picture. She sure is beautiful. How tall was she? she looks about the same height, 13.2.

I just checked in on them and Katie is doing great, nighttime pics are so cute I will have to post it in the am.
She is getting along great with my 19 month old colt, Brock. Wrangler is a bit put out but not to bad. They chased around the pasture a bit as expected and so she got her first workout:-)

My mare was 14.1 hands, she got knocked up by a 18 month old colt. When she foaled, according to the vets, the foal must of kicked and flipped her small intestines so I lost the mare and had an orphan to raise. But that is another story.
Is your colt gelded?
Your mare has the same expression my mare had, everyone thought she had QH in her. Your mare is adorable.

He is not gelded, but I can only feel one testicle, he is out of a drop dead gorgeous paint mare, and a reg mini both tobianos. I would LOVE a foal from this cross , however, he is still very young acting, he still foal mouths at the horses.
Tell me more about the colt that covered her. Was he stallion acting?
This is a pic of my colt, He is the dark Bay( looks Black but was just clipped)

You never know when that switch in his head is going to flip and they go from being the baby to being the man. I had 2 colts so I kept them together and away from the girls. When he did get in with the girls I wasn't sure he had gotten her. He was all beat up and on the opposite side of the field from them. When I went to get him out of the field he did not want to go near them at all. I would have sworn he did not do the deed but I was wrong. I guess he was quite a boy pretty young.

Wow, thats crazy. I wouldnt be upset if he did breed her, but honestly she is a good 2 hh taller than him, and quite a bit rounder. I have been doing some reading, and seems he should be getting ready soon. I havent had a stud colt before so this is new to me.
I would like to see her loose some weight first though.

OK new pics!
She started her lunging this am, she did great. I am giving her a supplement because she isnt getting grain. By looking at her do yall think she is to heavy to breed before spring? Or should I wait til then? whats best with a heavy mare?

Again Holly, kudos on pulling off the shorts and boots look! Love it! And my philosophy has always been to breed em fat. They seem to take much easier, and hold on to them better. I'd breed her (if you have any interest in a really late really HOT foaling! )

Hahahaha Diana!!!! I was going to wear socks with flip flops and my eye patch......

I cant find a stallion though. Ive been looking and the only stallions are biggies....I want a pony. I posted a request on CL and got pics from 3 diff stallion owners and OMGosh were they awful! There was a pic sent from a Paint stud but I dont want that. Now I could bred her to Twists sire. But Not sure if I want to do that yet or not. sigh.
Now another thing I have heard but not sure if its true.....I heard heavy mares tend to foal colts and mares on the thin side tend to throw fillies. I may have read that here some where....
I would still like to wait till Oct / Nove to breed her if I do. Thoughts?

Holly, if Dynomite does not work, check with Samantha, she has two beautiful welsh boys....I'm sure she'd love to see a foal out of either one of them. I have Solomon on my list, but wanted to make sure he was homozygous for black first. She is going to have him checked...what a cutie patootie!

Yes, AI is a real pain, but she is pretty flexible in helping you get them in foal. I have been very very unsuccessful in trying to find nice stallions to breed to that would do live cover, they just won't do it....so I have only been able to AI. Most of my stallions have also been within an hours drive for me, bu still no go, I do not blame them. They are showing and marketing their stallions and it's too big a risk to have them hurt doing live cover.

True.
Well its been 3 days and Kate is loosing weight already. She lunged again this am and actually broke into gallop for me:-) I saddled her up after and rode her a bit. We walked her down the street to a neighbors house and she did great. I took a couple of pics of her as hubby worked with her. He really likes her!

My daughter has been going on and on about riding lessons....took her tonight to a guy locally who is very good at what he does, and he wants PAID ALOT to work with her, and only has HUGE horses...she's a bit intimidated. I'd sure like to have that mare....I'll even come and pick her up! Wait..will she fit in my trailer? LOL
She does look better now though!

LMAO.....! Yesterday Hubby and I went riding and we had a guy stop and ask what we would take for her...we were shocked and surprised! Of course he said 50$ and I said 50,000. Hahahaha!(he is such a jokester)

I did get over this past week and talk to the people who got Bonny and Twist. Twist is HUGE she is almost as big as Bonny!!! LOOKs almost exactly like Bonny now! I will have to get pics next time! The kids are really enjoying her, they ride her 3 times a week, trot and gallop too! I am thrilled!

I have been on your site and mine a few times trying to catch you! I have new pics of Katie! She is getting the cutest belly! And she is just the best lil mare ever! Its so funny because I put Brock in with her for company and she totally bosses him around Ha! We have started to extend the mini pen and they LOVE it!

Other than that Fred and I also just had our 20 yr anniversary, wow its been a busy week!

Next in line, Breeding Kate in the spring...must find a stallion! HELP!!

Hi Holly, Kate looks really good. She is just the type I look for in a school horse. Kind eye, round body and short to the ground. LOL. The first thing I think you need to decide on as far as a stallion goes is what you would like to do with the foal. Then you might want to decide on a few breeds that you are interested in and then look at their registry websites and look under the stallion directory. So do I understand that you have a baby due this spring? (Pony obviously :-)

I actually have a miniature from Diana, Katie, thats due in the spring to her 27 inch stallion Dynamite!

As far as Kates foal, I would like a shorter pony type trained for kids. That seems to be what I like to do. I enjoy training them for the kids:-)I like the bulk that Kate has, but for young kids her size can be somewhat intimidating for some children. I wouldnt mind a shorter version of her, maybe 12 hh ish. LOL
I wouldnt mind a foal from Her and my 11.2 hh stud colt. He is smaller and more slender build than she is.

I did some research on Kates past owners today. I found that she came from a farm North of Bryan Texas. The Husband and wife cant remember the name of the farm, or the name of the owners. They disagree also on wether she is welsh or welsh qh. The dont even remember the name she had when they bought her. They didnt get registration papers, But they had used her for barrels. They also said she pulled...not sure what they meant buy that.
They did say she was born on that farm, and its out in the country. Anyone know of a welsh breeder in Texas that fits that description?

Thanks everyone.

I Need to have a new name for Kate. Now that I have Katie from Mystic Rock (Diana) it has gotten very confusing around here lol.
Her name was Strawberry...NOT Good. So yall be creative and come up with a nice simple name for her...PLEASE lol.
