Just wondering if traveling a mare the day after (or couple of days after) AI'ing can potentially affect her chances of conceiving?... I have a couple of mares I want to get AI'ed this season & I have to take them 600kms to a vet clinic to get it done. Both mares travel well and get regular spells/drinks/food whilst traveling. I want to get them AI'ed then bring them home afterwards then take them back to be scanned when they are ready. Would traveling like this potentially affect their success of conceiving/ embryo loss???
The points worthy of consideration that could potentially have a negative impact on pregnancy establishment/maintenance would be related to:
Removal of the mare prior to confirmation of ovulation;
Removal of the mare prior to, or causing interruption of, suitable post-breeding treatments such as use of an oxytocin protocol;
Excessively hot weather/conditions during the transport, as there has been some research that demonstrated a link between the mare getting excessively hot (such as might happen during transport or exercise in hot weather) and a higher rate of pregnancy loss.
Other than that, as long as it is within a few days of breeding, there is little chance of a pregnancy being negatively impacted. Remember that the conceptus doesn't actually descend into the uterus for about 5½ after conception/ovulation, so it is still well protected in the oviduct up to that point.
