Jos, if a preg mare (300 days) picks up one of these ''mystery viruses'' floating around which the vet cannot diagnose, and has a raised temp what would be a SAFE antibiotic to use which wouldn't compromise the unborn foal? And is Bute safe to use on a preg mare? TIA.

If it's a virus, any antibiotic isn't going to have an effect. Antibiotics don't work against viruses.

Bute is commonly used during mid- to late-pregnancy with no issues, but you should confirm with your prescribing veterinarian before use.

Sorry, Jos, been offline a while.

Brain not functioning, I should have added if the vet feels the need to put her on ab's due to possible secondary bacterial infection. Unfortunately since my move, the closest vet is a cow vet who has no experience in equine breeding work..
