So I breed my mare via AI In June, at 20 days she was checked in foal, and then at 30 day the farm that I was at said that they thought that she looked like she was in heat, my vet was out of town so I had her checked by a differnt vet, that said she was not in foal. I let it go and figuared i would start again this year... well I kept her under lights, and started to get her ready for a April breeding... and have not been able to get her to come into heat... I have given her lutulize (sp) x 2 with no sign of heat. she acts like she wants to kill him when I tease her. she does look like she has gotten a little heavy but she may be fat. my vet is out of town so... I had a friend that has worked for a breeding farm for a long time palp her she wouldn't stand still for him, and I had nothing at the house to give her. he said he could not feel anything on her overies, and she had good tone , but was not sure because she was moving so much. last year she came into heat really easy and always been a mare that seems to be always in heat, this would be her first baby. could she be pragnet????/

About 10% of mares will display estrus during pregnancy, so the fact that she was in "heat" (estrus) really means nothing. We always strongly recommend that a mare that was exposed to a stallion the previous breeding season be checked for pregnancy status again prior to breeding the next season even if she was thought to be open.

I would strongly recommend that you have this mare checked again by a competent veterinarian prior to attempting to breed her.

I have a vet coming to check her .... Is there any other reason that she would not come into heat after lutulize? I know they can have "silent heat" but this is a mare that always has shown really well and last year was showing heat 3 days after the med was given, I am teasing her with a diff. Horse .... Can they change from year to year? Thanks

Take a look at our article entitled "I gave my mare prostaglandin but it didn't work" (follow that link).
