hi all. I have a mare who is due in about 45 days (March 31). So far everything with her pregnancy has been text book. She is very healthy and UTD on everything. I had the vet do a ultrasound when she was 7 months just to check that everything looked fine. I did it then just to make sure she was looking good before winter started. This last weekend she has somewhat gone off her food. She gets 2 flakes of alfalfa AM and 2 flakes grass evening plus a huge scoop of LMF Development with her Vitamins. in the last 4 days she has been cleaning up the alfalfa really well, but leaving the grass. I know that is typical in one sense because alfalfa is a lot yummier to some horses. But she has been on this feeding for months so I am a little concerned with the sudden change. Anyone have experience where the horses go off feed this far away from delivery time. I heard mares will go off feed within a day or to of delivery. She has no other pre-delivery signs. She just barely started bagging up, but they go down after exercise. So is this normal or should I clarify this with my vet?
Hey Robin, My mini mares sometimes go off food early too. I think it's just that they're getting so close and there is less room, or it's uncomfortable for them. I've never had any problems with those who do it, and they usually start eating again in a day or two.
