What meds are ok to use? I am referring to Dex, Bute, Banamine, and antibiotics. My mare (may not be preg., may be reabsorbing) has bad case of hives to the point that her belly has oozing hairless areas. I gave her a 1/2 pak of Dex and put on some dex/furozone/penn. ointment. Stallion owner says the Dex will kill an embryo. Just curious what you have used and to what extent.

annie: I wouldn't use any more meds than what is absolutely necessary. My vets and I practice using little to nothing. I would be equally concerned with furozolodine as well. I have had to use Bute a few times with pregnant mares but I would say that the best person to answer that would be your vet. What is causing the hives? Fly bites? An Allergy? Hmmmm...I would find out for sure if she's pregant. If she is, I would use caution with any medication other than what is necessary. If she is reabsorbing I would want to find out why. And, is this health problem going to be a continual issue for her? I guess I have more questions for you annie than what I do answers. Sorry about that.
