I have kinda a stupid question but does anybody have any type of special foal halter that they recommend, or can I just buy one from a feed store? And what size should it be?

I strongly prefer a leather figure 8 halter. They fit well, and you can leave them on without the risks of a nylon halter. Since they are specifically for babies, they usually only come in two sizes-- suckling and weanling. Some come with two crown pieces-- so you can use the same halter the whole time and just switch to the larger crownpiece when they outgrow the first one.

I usually put the halter on within the first 24 hours, and they wear it all the time. The figure 8's fit so well that it's never been a problem, but even if they did get hung up on something, the leather would break.

I also use a leather foal halter with a strap that hangs down from the bottom so you can grab it easily. I pretty much do what Beth does except I don't leave the halter on all the time. I know that leather is supposed to break but I have seen babies get hung up and the halter not breaking so it's not worth it to me. I put the halter on and off a couple times a day so the foal gets used to it and this seems to work well for me. :-)

I like leather too..and off and on...I don't leave it on all the time either...My problem is that my foals are ususally smaller, Paso's just are not as big, and the halters ususally swim for a while :-)

Just thinking about it, I can't wait for my babies to get here. Their new halters are already in the tack room, just need those babies to be born!

One is pretty close. Close enough that I put down the straw late last night, and was setting alarms for every hour to keep an eye on her.

Jan, I have Arabians so you can imagine how small their little foal heads are! I buy my foal halters from Schneider's as they supply a lot of tack for Arabs. www.sstack.com You might want to give them a try :-)

Do you guys have any idea what size I should get for mine? He/she will be a Quarter Horse, so I'm not sure how big or small their head will be. Lol
