On Exodus Breeders Corp. I saw a product that checks the progesterone on mares by drawing blood. It's supposed to tell you if she's ovulated during early oestrus, so you know you can start breeding. When tested during her cycle it tells what part of her cycle she's in.

It says that it's also used to check the progestrone level during pregnancy. ReguMate does not alter test results, as it cannot read the ReguMate progestrone. I thought this would be perfect to check my mare's progestrone before taking her off of ReguMate.

Has anyone heard of this product or have used this product? I would like to know how accurate this is and if it's as good as it seems. I called Exodus and they swear by it. It's not terribly expensive, I think $34.00 for 6 tests.

Thank You very much,
Marilyn

Marilyn, I don't know anything about it but does the company offer a money back guarantee? If they do since it's not too expensive I might give it a try.

I called them and they said they couldn't do a money back guarentee because they have no way to control if the person is doing it correctly.

I guess I can understand their point as far as that goes. I did order it today. I'm going to try it probably this weekend. So I'll let you know what I think. I will give the results to the vet when he comes and see what he thinks.

If anyone is interested the website is

I hope it works for you let us know how it goes. Maybe your vet would check a blood sample for real cheap if you brought it to him if the results arent what you want

The "Target" progesterone kit has been available for many years. It is a stall-side semi-quantitative analysis kit that will give you a range of results (<1 ng/ml; 1-4 ng/ml; >4 ng/ml). I think you will find this is the same thing.

Results are as accurate as the care that is taken running the tests. Drawing blood is required. Make sure the test kits are kept refrigerated when not in use, but warmed to room temperature adequately prior to use. If it's not the "Target" kit, ignore all that and read the instructions closely... :-)

I should add that "Next Generation" and "Quick Check" are merely brand names of Exodus Breeders, and are not the product names - there is also a "Quick Check" sperm counter for example.

Thank you very much Jos, that is very interesting.

Yes, it's called Target. I've read about it in one of my reproductive books and thought it sounded like something I might find helpful.

I will have to make sure I follow directions explicitly.
