Can anybody tell me what function the clitoris has in the mare?

Just in all mammals the clitoris is a part of sexual reproduction. As the males penis passes over this sensitive area contractions occur in the mare’s reproductive tract. Material on the vaginal side of the cervix is moved out and material on the uterine side of the cervix will be swept in.

Nature has designed sexual reproduction to be a pleasurable experience. The clitoris plays an important part in making the experience pleasurable for the mare.

This is unlikely to be the case in the equine, where the glans of the penis in some cases, and the urethral extension in all cases penetrates into and often through the cervix during breeding. The end result being that - especially when combined with the tremendous hydraulic pressure of the equine ejaculation - the semen is deposited directly into the uterus.

In other species - humans of course being a good example - semen is deposited into the vagina rather than the uterus directly, and the vaginal/uterine contractions are important in aiding the movement of the semen as you describe. In the equine though, as the semen is deposited directly into the uterus during the breeding process, the requirement for those contraction is not present.

Equines are often different from other species when it comes to reproduction, and extrapolation of reproductive information from those other species to the equine is not always a safe thing to do! :-)
