Had a 3yr old maiden mare palpated and u/s yesterday as she has never shown a season to the best of my knowledge, and we would like to think about breeding her in the near future.

Vet said uterus 'small' but not abnormal. No fluid or visible sign of infection and no discharge. Vet said no need to do culture and cytology as she's maiden, despite my asking him to twice.
Vet felt she's not producing enough hormone to cause ovulation and has therefore probably never ovulated.

Told me to give Regumate 5mls for 12 days, and on the 13th day 1.25mls u/m Prostaglandin to make her ovulate.

Jos, does this sound the correct way to go about getting her to cycle regularly?
Many thanks.

Michele, Jos correct me if I am wrong, but this is not exactly the time of year to make a mare cycle properly, wait until th espring. Mares sort of hibernate during the winter, not breed. It is not the temps that effect them as much as the amount of light.

You should be seeing cyclicity by now, but it may be that she is still transitional - or immature!

If she is late-transitional, then the Regumate may assist. However... if she didn't/hasn't have/had some significant sized (>3 cm) follicles and uterine edema present, then the likelihood of success is lower.

I don't agree on the lack of culture/cytology simply because she is a maiden - I have seen Pseudomonas aeruginosa in maiden mares, but each to his own...

All you can really do is wait and see.

If she doesn't commence cycling within a month or so, you might want to run a karyotype to ensure that she does not have chromosomal abnormalities.

What can I say, how the heck do you know all this
I agree with you on the culture/cytology and will get someone else to do it.
Thanks!
