Hi, I have a 3yr old mare I would like to use frozen semen on. Has anybody had experience of breeding frozen semen to a maiden mare - successfully or not? Is it still necessary to have a breeding soundness exam even though she has never been near a stallion before, or is just a culture advisable, or nothing? Many thanks for any info, Michele |

There would be no reason not to use a maiden mare for the frozen semen breeding, although you will encounter some who will tell you not to - ask them why, and for research to support their position! Even though she is a maiden mare, you should still have a culture and cytology performed (follow that link for more information on the process). |

Thanks Jos, for once what I want to hear is what is what I hear I'll make sure she has the culture and cytology. Now the next question is, I've never noticed her properly in season despite teasing. Would a shot of prostaglandin suffice? Her dam is very fertile and has taken in both foal heat and during lactation before. cheers Michele |

There are issues regarding the use of prostaglandin at random that will reduce reliability. Read the article about reasons for prostaglandin failure (follow that link). You might want to consider using P&E - it will be a lot more reliable (follow that link for information about P&E. |

last year I bred a maiden 3 year old mare with frozen semen and had no problems at all. She took the first cycle and is carrying a healthy pregnancy. She is due in April, 2008. The key is competent veterinary assistance and a healthy fertile mare. terry |
