HI, I have tried searching the web to find information on 1)where do you place the stethoscope on the mare to hear the featal heartbeat? 2) Is there anytime when you cant hear the heartbeat (of course I dont mean listening to a dead foal) like the time the fetus has gone over the pelvic brim for awhile? 3) how early can the heartbeat be detected and heard by stethoscope? thanx
Susan

1): Anywhere - it won't make any difference. You can't hear the fetal heartbeat in the equine;
2): During pregnancy (see (1)) :-)
3): Once the foal is born

I have never heard of listening for it, never even thught you could hear it since it is so small at 28 days. That is what we do, I religiously have my vet ultrasound my mares at 28 days and find the heartbeat.
