Can anyone give me an idea if my mare is in foal or just fat? I have only had her for a couple of months and she has put on a fair bit of weight since then. I am hoping to send her to a stallion at the end of this month. If she is in foal, I have no idea when she would be due.

Any help appreciated!!

I know you probably don't want to hear this but the only sure way to know is to have the vet out. I personally bred a mare of mine last yr and she never came back in heat, gained wt, LOOKED pregnant. I would of bet the farm on it (i actually bet my husband) and lost :-( she wasn't pregnant. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks, I do have the vet coming out late next week, but he doesn't really want to palpate her as she is tiny and he has a large arm. Is there any other ways/tests I can do? I honestly won't mind if she isn't as I have already booked the stallion.

Ultrasound is a definitive and blood test can be done if she's far enough along. If you're going to breed her anyway I would go for the ultrasound that way he can tell you if she has a follicle and ready to ovulate if not pregnant. Good luck and keep us posted!

What a lovely hairy girl. I want one of those. Its my birthday tomorrow. Maybe i should ask my hubby. But then again, maybe not! I agree, ultrasound or bloods is the only way to go. Best of luck.

I had the same issue with my mini this year and she was not in foal.
I also have vets that won't palpate or do ultrasound and it is really frustrating since I know lots of breeders of minis have vets that use ultrasound and it is recommended in miniature horse books and magazines. Where ARE these vets!!? I want one!!
