Has anyone else noticed that their horses are hanging on to their coats in the UK this year?

Officially its summer from July 1st and still spring at the mo and we have had changeable weather here - really hot for 2 weeks then constant rain for 2 weeks, then cloudy and cold, now getting a heat wave again.

My mare shed her winter coat (she had a blanket clip) back in April but rather than grow a summer coat straight away it grew through like a thick summer coat. Then she was turned out (with rug on cold nights) due to a kick injury that she needed to keep moving on and it's only today with a heat wave on it's way and the temps creeping up that she's starting to shed again.

It just seems really late in the year, but I just can't remember what's normal for her, I just have this odd feeling that this year seems different. The other horses at the yard have lost their coats quicker for them but still slower than previous years.

The vet saw her yesterday as part of normal pre-breeding checks and didn't notice it so it's not bad, just different. Anyone else had this in the UK?

She's 17 so could it be an age thing? She's a TB so should be fine coated really...

Cheers,

Emma
