My 12-yr old maiden mare has shown large follicle without heat. Used hormone injections to bring her into heat in the spring, but missed her ovulation. Considering using P & E and breeding late Sept timing for late Aug foal. Wondering if estrus cycle slows or "shuts down" this time of year due to shortening daylight, etc? Is spring the preferred time, the natural course of breeding cycles???????????

Many if not most mares do indeed shut down in the autumn (in the northern hemisphere), and it is important that the mare is cycling in order to have P&E work. You would probably (statistically) have a better success rate once the mare has started ovulating in the spring.
My stallion just covered my new mare for the 5th time on a 10 day cycle. In a couple weeks I will let you know our outcome! If you think you can get one more ovulation out of her for the year, why not try? Susan
