Hi. Do you have any idea why a mare that instantly comes in to heat on short cycle post estrumate has poor fertility on that cycle? I assume when this happens a larger diestrus follicle is recruited. Any idea how many days it takes to get a good cycle? We hate to pay for semen transport for a bad cycle so wish to bring such a mare back around....
There are multiple reasons, any or all of which may apply:
The cervix does not relax adequately prior to ovulation;
Uterine edema (associated with increased blood flow) does not increase adequately, so there is a likelihood of increased fluid retention (coupled with a tight cervix);
In a live cover situation, the mare may not be adequately receptive to the stallion;
The oocyte may not reach metaphase II prior to ovulation (rare);
People are not expecting such a quick ovulation and therefore do not breed in a timely manner (although obvious, this will affect statistics!).
