My mom has a 17 year old TB broodmare that she has been trying to get settled for 2 years now, first in 2009, skipped last year due to finances and now this year. 2009 the mare was given to her, as the owner had no luck getting her in foal, so she tried two times that year, as she lost her mare in foaling and had a stallion paid for that she could only use that year, so two attempts were made. She was pronounced in foal at 15 day check, but nothing there for heartbeat ck...many efforts to bring her in, ovulate, breed and check for ovulation resulted in no pregnancy. She gave up for that year, took next year off. Mare has had 8 foals previously, last pregnancy was 2008 from what I understand. She has bred three times this year, the first time, just going by her heat signs and no u/s to confirm anything. Of course, no pregnancy. Next time, we confirmed ovulation, live cover, etc. oxytocin, yada yada, no pregnancy. Last time they did the verification of ovulation, oxytocin protocol and this time used the "settle". Yesterday pregnancy check resulted in no pregnancy. Vet suggested a "Deep" uterine culture, I think that's what he called it...where they insert liquid into uterous, massage uterous, then draw the fluid back out, take to lab and spin it to check for bacteria. The other option was a uterine biopsy. Funds are getting slim, so he said we could try the culture first (two previous cultures/cytologys)were done this year as well and all clean. Mom wants to just try the same thing again, using the "settle" since they offer a refund if you use the product twice and she does not take...I on the other hand am thinking, why spend more money IF there is something more preventing her from settling. Just looking for some opinions and advice on how to guide her further. I am of the opinion that the mare probably has some type of issue going on with her uterous that we have just not identified. I would also add that she has no issues with fluid, however, is a candidate for a caslicks when the time comes. Thanks |

I would go with what your veterinarian is recommending, as it sounds like they know what they are doing - it was what I was about to suggest when I started reading the first few lines! Point out to your Mother that although Settle offers a guarantee (and you might want to check that is still operative - I'm not sure if it is or not, and I don't see it offered on their website any more) it is only to cover the cost of the Settle. It won't cover the cost of the vet fees, semen shipment (if any) and any other charges associated with the breeding, just the cost of the Settle.... Not a particularly good incentive in my opinion! |

Thank you Jos....she is going to continue on with that track and hopefully get this mare in foal! I also told her to call and check with settle regarding the guarantee... |

Hi Jos, well, settle sent mom a guarantee form and paperwork to fill out....they do guarantee and will refund up to a limit of $150 if mare fails to get pregnant, however, vet must follow their strict administration policies. The form does say 2008 breeding season...they probably need to fix this. If you'd like to read it for your own use, I'm happy to email to you...just need your address. K I think vet and mom are going to do a dmso lavage and try the settle once more. She is doing live cover, TB, so I guess, why not. |

Kim - the e-mail address that we have on file for you does not appear to be working (an earthlink.net address). Could you please drop the office a line (using that link) with your new address so they can send one to you to get the Settle information? Isn't it sad that we can't just exchange e-mail addresses on the board as a result of the spammer harvesting situation? <sigh> Thanks! |
