Just wondering with the oxytocin protocol is the dose the same for a shetland as a big mare? Where it says 20 i.u is that 20 iu in a 1ml insulin syringe? Sorry. Just came across this site and we have an older (15yo) maiden mare retaining a small amount of fluid, but our vet advised to give 1ml oxytocin 4 hrs after each service only, and was bred on day 3 and 5 only.. Is a 1 off dose after each service going to benifit the mare??
One can use 10-20 i.u., so certainly use of 10 i.u. in a Shetland mare would probably be adequate. A single treatment 4 hours post-breeding would probably be adequate for a minor delayed uterine clearance condition, but research (Leblanc, Katila etc.) indicates it to be inadequate for mares with significant clearance issues.
