hi, I'm new here and apolojize if this topic has been addressed recently.

we have an outside mare here to breed that come in normally 6-7 day length).
we bred ever other day however the last breeding ended up being 36 hours from the breeding before due to the fact that i wouldn't have any help later and the mare was probably going to go out soon.
We've caught everyone else in foal the first time except for our regumate mare so I'm floored that this outside mare did not stick.
What are the reasons for failure to conceive?
fact about the mare; she's a bit portly, 8 years old, has had one foal before via pasture breeding.
She also come from upstate where its much cooler for longer than here in the midsouth.
can anyone help me?
thanks

There are so many potential causes for failure of pregnancy establishment or maintenance that it would be a waste of time to even start listing them.

Your starting point should be to evaluate the mare, or rather have the mare evaluated by a competent equine reproduction veterinarian. They should perform a culture and cytology (follow that link for the importance of the cytology smear - a culture alone is worthless), evaluations of reproductive conformation including the cervix, and ultrasound and palpation of the reproductive at a minimum. They may also find other things that warrant further evaluation.

If someone is only breeding one or two mares, this is a valuable investment right from the beginning (or would have been) - especially as we are now getting late in the breeding season!
