I've got huge huge news for Uh-O. Her culture came back CLEAN!!! She has a 40mm folicle and the vet ordered semen. It'll be there tomorrow and will be bred tomorrow. YIPPEE!!! I'm actually in shock right now...

The vet said she had a huge glob of yellow stuff that was on the back of her hand when she pulled her hand out while taking the culture last Friday. She feels that was either an abcess or something caught in the pocket of the uterus that may have caused the problems. With all the antibiotics she had both uterian and by injection, the vet feels this may have done the trick.

The vet is extremely excited and had to call while she was working on the mare. lol Now that's excited! lol

We've waited a long time to hear news like this! I pray she gets pregnant!!!

I hope we have good news to share in the next few weeks. Wish me luck...

Thank you girls. I'll keep you posted. Tomorrow will be huge! The vet is going to check and see if she needs to be flushed after insemination, but is hesitant unless there's a fluid problem. The vet doesn't want to breech the cervix unless absolutely necessary.

The vet said she's positively going to use Oxytocin.

I hope you don't mind me going on and on, I'm just so darn excited!!! lol

Hi Marilyn....my mare is a PIG! My vet wants to strangle her, I'm sure....she went from a 38 yesterday am to a 43 follicle this am...she has some edema and is specking ok...she is teasing really well this am as well....so we are ordering for tomorrow, with hopes she does not ovulate again on us before AI....I've called to see about counter to counter, it will cost about $100 more for them to take it to airport, but the fedx part fee is about the same...I am waiting to hear from vet now to see if she wants to do that...it would arrive around 8:00 tonight, 2 hours to get home, 10:00 AI time....she may want to do that....we shall see...good luck to you today! I hope Uh-O waits and ovulates perfectly for you...Kim

I would definately spend the extra money and get it in her asap. You've got so much money into her breeding already, what's an extra $100.00. (yeah right) lol My philosophy... that's why I'm horse poor. lol! Anyway, I've heard they usually ovulate later in the day, so if this is true, she could ovulate tonight.

Sweetie is a tough one to figure. But then again she does have some edema, so she may wait until tomorrow... how does the follicle look? Any white line underneith it? Is it still round looking or has it oblonged? Just curious how close it looks to ovulating. Did the vet say it's getting soft?

When Uh-O's last cycled, she was a 40mm on Monday and ovulated Thursday night. So this cycle, she's a 40mm on Monday again, so I'm thinking with HCG, she may go a day or two earlier, which I guess would be tonight or tomorrow. Isn't this fun... NOT... it's only fun when it works. lol

Good luck Kim, I'm crossing my fingers and toes for you.

Spoke with vet...she said that tomorrow before noon she feels we will be good...so we are fedxing! Stallion owner happier with this, they don't have to make an hour trip to airport! HE HE..I sure hope she does everything right this time. I told vet I'd spend the money, but she said, no she felt good about tomorrow..so...he we go again...ha ha...I will give the desolorin shot tonight when I get home...I'm always afraid to give that, but she said it won't make a difference if she's going to ovulate tonight...what a roller coaster ride. She's checking mom's mare in the am too, so we may be hauling her to the breeding shed tomorrow...this should be over by now, but I guess our mares like this time of year..but its HOT HOT HOT...already in the high 90's here and humid...ICK...how did Uh-O's AI go today...have they inseminated yet? I so hope you get her in foal! :-)

Update on Uh-O:
Email from the vet

Hi Marilyn,

We got the semen first thing this morning and inseminated Uh-O...semen looked GREAT! She will get first oxytocin dose shortly (4 hrs post AI) and another later tonight. We will check her tomorrow for ovulation/fluid/etc to see what additional treatment (if anything) is needed.

Follicle was 54 mm, big and round. She had edema last week, but it was diminished yesterday and today. I did give hCG for insurance, but we have a second dose of semen if necessary...

I'll send another update tomorrow!
Amanda

So it looks like everything is going as planned.

Now we just wait and see if Uh-O ovulates tonight. Fingers crossed!

Marilyn

Marilyn and Kim, hope everything goes well for you both, this AI business sounds complicated. We breed all by live cover as the TB industry does not allow AI. We got 6 out of 8 in foal on their first cover this year so doing pretty good, one more on a second cover and one more we gave up hope of getting covered this year. Best of luck again

Ad...thanks for the well wishes...I do so wish I could do live breeding..it would make things much easier, but so many stallion owner's won't even offer it anymore....they don't want to chance hurting their show stallions....I think it's more natural and certainly less cost effective and would be easier I feel to catch the ovulation, just breed every other day until she ovulates...but this is what we have to deal with unfortunately....and sometimes it works first try, then sometimes, you get the ones like Marilyn and I have....the "problem" mares who like to be really sneaky....we will overcome and get these mares in foal...I have faith!

Thank you Ad TB! AI is a great way to breed, if you have deep pockets. But when someone is on a shoe string budget, it gets out of hand very quickly. And then add a difficult mare to it, it it gets scary expensive.

I'm very curious as to why Sweetie is having a difficult time this year, since this wasn't an issue in the past. I wonder if age has something to do with it. Kim, how old is Sweetie?

Uh-O was a problem from the get go. It took her until age 4 to really become a mature looking horse. The previous owners tried to breed her at 3 and at that time, she needed caslicks due to her bad back end confirmation. We were told they just threw in the semen (meaning they were not too careful figuring she was young and could clean herself) So she probably had an infection since then, which then turned into a serious problem.

Her confirmation has improved dramatically after she turned 4 years old. This year she turned 5.

With the help of our equine reproduction specialist, I believe she got Uh-O clean. Uh-O has been inseminated yesterday, so we'll see what today brings. Hopefully she's ovulated and then the longest two weeks of my life begins. lol

Marilyn, Sweetie is a 1999 mare, but has had 5 foals, she she has had uterine clearance issues this year...first AI, we had to inseminate twice, this was early april...lots of cloudy stuff...2nd AI, again lots of clearance issues, had to be flushed twice, third attempt, we had cultured and cytology again...all clean, but this time put caslicks in, as she got really loose when in heat...so we were so prepared, short cycled her and the ninny ovulated before semen arrived....so here we are at this try....everything appears to be in place, clean culture, caslicks, egg sitting there (or not!) and semen in route! So...I feel we have prepared as best we can for this time...and she is being extremely receptive to the boys right now....so, I sit here going crazy for this to be over LOL...I've dreamed about what this baby will look like and how magnificent it will be....so by golly IT WILL BE! LOL

I'm not sure how I feel about Uh-O's breeding since I haven't heard from the vet yet, but I'm feeling very good about Kim. I think Sweetie's going to be pregnant this time around... just a feeling...

I'm glad you guys are having good feelings, it is helping me stay positive. Semen arrived, and was dually put in said mare. She had not ovulated, has a nice 47 follicle, gave her the deslorin last night, so hopefully, in the next 12 hours she will do her thing! I have to give oxytocin tonight and we will re-check her tomorrow...I hope she does not have alot of fluid...I am thinking of letting her hang out all night around said boy friend....maybe that will help. I am really strongly considering if no fluid to ask vet to put the other dose in just in case....the stallion owner has said that is what they suggest you do, although, I know it really does no good, but who knows? I am trying to start dancing too, but I've been so busy with breedings and checks, I'm getting bogged down at work, so I better get focused! :-) Kim

I'm very excited for you Kim, I have a good feeling about her this time! I'll continue to pray for her!

Guess what all, Uh-O ovulated last night with no fluid this morning. This has never happened... not having fluid that is... who knows, she may be pregnant this time around. The vet also gave her one dose of Gentacyn just "in case". She said she likes to do that because she was "in there" and it won't hurt. YIPPEE!!!!

Don't worry Kim, tomorrow I have a feeling she'll ovulate and you'll be there with me, thinking, is she or isn't she??? lol

I would definately keep her out tonight. She'll continue to tease and that'll help with the fluid.

I would rethink adding another dose of semen too soon, she'll have a greater chance of having fluid and if she doesn't now, possibly the next time you won't be so lucky. I would follow the vet's advice on that one. Tomorrow will be a better indicator what you should do. But she'll ovulate for you by tonight. I feel very strongly about this.

We ordered semen and it arrives today so Europa will be inseminated later. She is clean and has no issues and we expect her to catch. Sure hope so...she is a very very important mare. Nicola gets her shot today so she will be ready in a few days. We check Eneida on Monday. Europeo seems to be fine and had his blood test today. Hopefully he can come home with Europa in a few days when she ovulates. It will be a red letter day...his first day in the field at about six weeks of age....it has been a bit of a scare with him. The vet says he is growing extremely fast and I know he is a very very big boy. Will take pix when he comes home.

Terry - I mised something with Europeo. Is he just with at the vet with Mom for her insemination or did he have to go back for something? Last I read, he and Mom where on stall rest, but he was doing well. Why wouldn't he come back with Europa?

Kathee....he developed noticeable swelling in all four fetlocks and had a high white count....after several days of diagnostics to the tune of $1000 it was determined a course of IV antibiotics was needed...My fantastic vet volunteered to take the pair to her house where it would be so much cheaper for him to be cared for....Next thing I know, Europa lost her pregnancy and now is being bred again today....

So hoping by Monday, blood test for Europeo is clean and Europa ovulates and is pregnant at the 14 day check...

Never a dull moment!

Well, tomorrow is the big day for Uh-O. She will have her ultrasound tomorrow morning at 10:00 am Michigan time. That's an hour ahead of me, so at least I have one hour less to wait. lol

This is what the vet said on her email...

Hi Marilyn, I will be checking her around 10 am tomorrow--I'll let you know ASAP. If Uh-O isn't pregnant tomorrow, I would suggest that we re-culture her and wait for that result before ordering semen again. We may end up having to short-cycle her, but may also miss this heat wave!

Fingers crossed--
Amanda

I'm am apprehensive and hopeful at the same time... Please say a prayer for my Uh-O, I would be eternally grateful!

I am very sorry for both of you. I have been following your sagas! This crap is for the birds. I swear, MARE is a four letter word as my vet says.

I am waiting on my check for my mare next Friday the third. This is the second time this season we tried and it will be the last attempt this year.

Her culture came back CLEAN!!!

But what did her cytology show?

If Uh-O isn't pregnant tomorrow, I would suggest that we re-culture her and wait for that result before ordering semen again.

Make sure you get a cytology smear done as well as the culture, and here's why! (Follow that link). Note that one possible sequela of antibiotic therapy in mares is a uterine yeast infection, and that may not be picked up on a culture alone, but should be seen on a cytology smear.

I am on pins and needles for sure...I really really need Europa to be pregnant.....

Today is video/photo shoot day and one of the hottest days of the year..supposed to go to 100 degrees+....

We have about 15 horses to prepare for the shoot this morning...that is a lot of grooming and trimming, I penned everyone up since yesterday so they will be brilliant and energetic....We are trailering in Kenya for the day....we will try to get mare/baby shots, moving mare shots, youngster shots, and some staged pictures for the website....

Bunches of people are coming to help including our Samantha and her friends...they will chase babies and help Natalie the photographer.

It takes a village to pull off a project like this...and afterwards we are having a big BBQ....wish you all could be here for the fun.

Well we got it done...it was so hot it was just horrible but we didn't start filming until about 4 pm. I can hardly wait to see the footage....it will be a few weeks...

as for the mare's ultrasounds.....

Europa is 14 days, Eneida's foal has a heartbeat...I am very relieved....only Nicola left...she will be checked on July 7.

We have 7 in foal and 1 left to check....6 in foal to Fugitivo, 1 to Gumer (dorado andaluz.com) and Nicola to Genio-MAC.

Thank you for your support and friendship...I enjoy the comaradarie so much.

Congrats Terry! One more to go, good for you! Isn't it a good feeling to have the filming behind you.

Kim, did you breed Sweetie this weekend? I hope you have the best of luck this breeding.

Tomorrow I find out about Uh-O to see if she's infected again. This is really tough going, this girl. I'm trying not to focus on it too much this time around, it's not doing me any good to worry about it.

Heidi, I hope your mare is pregnant this time around, I feel for you, and know your frustration. Good luck!!!

Jos, I posted this up above also, but thought I'd put it here too, in case you miss the other post.

This is in reference to my 5 year old maiden mare named Uh-O. See the thread "huge news for Uh-O" and "Breeding Problem mares" for more info. regarding my mare.

Would you please give me your insight on what should be done with this mare that's been a chronic "dirty" mare? She's had the drug to rid her uterius of biofilm already and had been medicated for Strep. Zoo. The next culture and cytology came back negative with no inflamation. So she was bred, but was open at 16 day ultrasound. She was then recultured and had a cytology done and this is what the vet said the lab work showed. Can you give me advise as to what should be done with this mare? Do we medicate her again or leave her and breed her again?

Hi Marilyn,
The cytology was negative for inflammatory cell and bacteria; culture had Gardinerella vaginalis (not a pathogen) and "few E. coli"...the delay was in the susceptibility test for the E.coli...it was susceptible to everything. With the lack of cytologic evidence of infection and no fluid or physical evidence of inflammation, I'm not too concerned about the E.coli. What are your thoughts?
A

I have no clue what Gardinerella vaginalis (not a pathogen) is and if this is a concern for her. Also, having a few E Coli, wouldn't a few Ecoli make many Ecoli if left untreated? Do you think the mare should be medicated for all of the above? I'm not sure what I should do...

Thank you in advance for any and all help!
Marilyn
