I have my mare out on a breeding lease. She had a colt in April that had to be humanely euthanized (severe hernia, intenstines spilled out). She has been rebred 4 times via shipped semen, and once after that with natural cover. She is short cycling on her own at 17 days. She is producing 35mm follicles She has been cultured and came back negative. any ideas? She is coming back to me in November, and I would like to try to breed her in the spring.

If she's coming back into estrus at 17 days, she's not short cycling. That would be a normal inter-estrus period when coupled with 4-6 days of estrus.

Are you confirming ovulation?

How old is the mare?

What did the cytology show?

Was her cervix evaluated?

There's too many variables to give an opinion...

I am getting information 2nd hand, but what I have been told is as follows:

17 day cycle includes 2 days of being in heat.
Not teasing, normally shows in raving heat. The only way they knew she was in heat was she was very cranky.
Before she was bred the first time this year, she had a lot of fluid, the vet flushed her with penicillin.
The tone of her cervix was good.
On live cover, stallion was bred to 12 mares this year. All of them took except this mare. His counts were in the 80 to 90% range.
Produced 35mm follicles and ovulated each time.
Lessee was not sure if a cytology was done. she is going to ask her vet and get back to me. Thanks for any help you can give me.
