Ok...we have a 21yo mare we are breeding by live cover this year. We started Oxytocin therapy at the start of her cycle. After the first breeding two days ago we noticed she sucked a lot of air in post breeding and then through out the day. So the vet was out and put very small surgical staples in up high and said that they shouldn't interfere with breeding. We did not breed yesterday but we did breed today. After the breeding I found that most of the staples let go and I'm concerned of what could happen if one got into her uterus.
It's going to depend entirely on where it lodges and how. It would be most likely to end up in the vagina rather than the uterus, but getting through the cervix is still a possibility. It should show on ultrasound, but there would be no guarantees.
Another serious concern would be injury to the stallion if one comes loose and is in the vagina...
