I am planning to AI my first maiden this year. I have AI'd in the past just not a maiden. So my question is, should I be going in prior to breeding to break the hymen? When do you normally do it on maiden mares? How many days prior to breeding should it be done (can it be done earlier in the same heat cycle I wish to breed on?)? Thanks!
There is not necessarily a hymen present, but if it is present, breakage at the time of the AI is usual. The only time you may run into an issue doing this is if there is a particularly tough hymen that you are unable to break yourself and require veterinary intervention.
