My friend bought a mare to be her show/riding horse. She however in the next few years would like to possibly breed the mare. The thing is when she bought the mare the people that owned her had tried breeding her by AI for 2 cycles(she was 5) later in the season but she did not catch. The first was by shipped semen and there was a follicle, but didn't catch. This vet did have a hard time palpating the mare. The second breeding the lady took her to the stallion and they told her not to waste her money as she has only one cycling ovary(I also have a mare with one ovary so I figure that shouldn't be the problem). The lady has lots of other very nice horses and felt it was hit and miss therefore didn't pursue it any further. Does anyone have any advice or any suggestions as to why this mare would not catch or why a vet would have a hard time palpating the mare. Her vulva and everything outside looks good. I told her to get a vet exam done.
That's the exact same advice I would give. The mare would need a breeding sound exam to check all possible issues. There may be nothing wrong with her at all and she just didn't take the two times they tried
That's what I thought. This board just has some great advice and thought someone may have dealt with something similar. I believe she is going to get the exam done and then she will know for sure.
