If a stallion bred a mare that cultures with hemolytic strep what are the chances he will have it as well. Does the stallion owner need to worry about the stallion getting sick or about the next mare he breeds? Is there anything that needs to be done for the stallion, the mare will be infused 3X, then re cultured.
b hemolytic strep. is the most common form of bacteria found in the uterus of the mare - usually Streptococcus equi. sub. zooepidemicus. This has not been confirmed as a sexually transmited pathogen, but has been suggested as such by some. If indeed it is a STD, then the chances of transmission from mare to stallion are low primarily as a result of the way a stallion is built - they are less likely to harbour pathogens than a mare, and a commonly environmental organism such as this is likely to be encountered in any situation. Certainly though, AI would be preferred.
