We have been trying unsucessfully to cross our 10hh pony on larger full size mares. We have a dug out ditch for the mare to stand in which allows the pony to mount and service the mare. However, we are wondering if it is possible that the smaller sized penis is not getting close enought to the cervix to deposit sperm or if the angle is off as this is an older mare and the vagina is slightly tilted. The mare has been a broodmare and has never had problems before. The stallion has had an 84% conception rate on pony mares (which he pasture bred). Any thoughts on this? We have also bred him to a young maiden 15hh mare and she did not settle either. Thanks
Without a semen evaluation you really can't determine if the problem is stallion-oriented or not. Certainly if he is ejaculating into the vagina rather than the cervix/uterus, that will lower pregnancy rates, but it is difficult to assume that is the issue without proof. It is certainly worth noting that there are more simple reproductive issues that will lower pregnancy rates that involve the mare than that involve the stallion.
The simplest thing for you to do will be to collect semen and inseminate the mare - and you can do a semen evaluation at the same time.
