Does anyone have a ballpark idea of how much a vet charges to inseminate a mare?

Well, depends!
Are you including the ultrasounds and insemination?
Insemination alone is not too expensive, but adding in the costs of the u/s's bring it up. I would be prepared to spend anywhere from $200-400.
You may get to spend less....but...who knows.
For myself, I expect to have at least 2-3 ultrasounds w/farm call ($70 each) HCG injection $20-40, and insemination.
I like AI, because my mare can stay close to me, no travel expenses (or my time), etc.

I had scans before hand to check when to breed my mare and I had to have a PG jab to bring her into season, the Insemination and the US where done at the vets and she had to stay there for about a week in total, We had an extra scan because we thought she was reabsorbing at first and I had to transoort her to anf from the vets probably 3 times while all this was going on. The semen was 200 and the transport (even though I ended up having to collect it myself) was 80 in the end. (I got 20 back for travelling across the country myself to get it, and it cost me more than that because I didnt get paid at work for the day off to do it!!) In total, getting my mare pregnant cost me around 1500 (approx $1000 I think - but I appreciate it probably isnt as expensiv in the US as it is here)

Be prepared for mishaps, my journey was not smooth, but not too bad either. I enjoyed it all - and luckily - I had been warned over and over that I should have some back up cash incase anything unexpected cropped up. I didnt want to put my mare at risk.

It would be too easy if they had heats when we wanted them so that we could organise the shipping! Thats why I had to collect it myself otherwise Id have been on heat number three!!!

Good luck with it all...

What does it cost? In money or cliff-hanging suspense? I'm the lady that had to track Fed Ex down on the SECOND day after my semen was shipped priority overnight. I literally insisted on having the driver's phone # after 36 hours of phone calls trying to track it so I could pick it up. I don't want to waste ONE breeding cycle. I have others coming along.
AMAZING...the swimmers were still swimming. Congrats to professionals on the other end. They aren't cheap --- In Malibu --- so it takes the sting out that the paperwork and packing were perfect on that end and that they packed nearly two billion in the package! What little chance we have is due to a stubborn mare that ignores HCG appparently and the upscale neighborhood vets!
Any way you do it...be prepared to WORK IT, BABY. This is not for someone who is not totally committed.

update: mare did NOT conceive on this try. Next time out...switched out stallions and bred her to a horse that is in the state. Had a courier service bring the semen the same day. Voila! Pregnancy. The horse in Malibu was bred to another mare that month and she's pregnant as well. No running for semen this time. Tracked that package like a hawk!
