I have a 12.2hh stallion. Wondering what size AV would be best for him. This is the first time I have ever collected a stallion. Looking for some advice on preparing the semen after collection. And what equipment is needed, I am looking to just get the basics until I know I am able to even collect him.

Ideally the AV will not exceed the length of the stallion's penis in order to avoid the stallion ejaculating within the heated lumen of the AV and heat-shocking the sperm. It's one reason why we prefer the INRA-French AV over the Colorado. There are miniature and pony AVs available in the event that his penis is short, but check first - just because he's a pony doesn't mean he has a short penis!

An answer to your question about how to process the semen would be rather prolonged and time consuming for here. You should contemplate taking a course or going to a (reputable) facility that does the and asking them to teach you. There are quite a few little twists and turns that will make the difference between a poor or "OK" shipment, and a good one...

In a nutshell, you are going to collect the semen, filter it to remove gel (which may be done in-line on the AV), add extender warmed to body temperature at a rate of 1:1, evaluate the semen for sperm motility and concentration, calculate the correct shipping/insemination dose (1 billion sperm for shipping, 500 million progressively motile, morphologically normal sperm for immediate on-farm use), perform the final extension to bring the final sperm concentration to 25 million/ml if shipping, then package it up for shipping or go ahead and inseminate.

As you can see, there are rather a large number of steps, so as I say, it is a little too extensive for a quick response here!

Good luck! :-)

I built the Power Pole phantom designed by Jos, plans available on here, and have collected several outside 12.2 pony stallions on it. As Jos said above it's not a hard thing to do but attention to detail is critical and you'd be best served getting some professional tuition so you can start with confidence. Good luck!

Thanks for all the advise! I know there is a lot to collecting, and in my case its even more difficult as my stallion is a Zebra. And just trying to figure out what he will allow and what will work for him. vets will not work with him being a exotic.
I just ordered several books and a breeder is sending me a few DVDs. I am hoping to get out to some farms to learn. I have done a lot of breeding over the years, and work at a breeding farm but we have just been doing live cover as we only use our own stallion.. My husband did just build me a phantom and we are going to try that.
I have been searching for a used INRA but with no luck yet, there was one on this site but I didn't see it fast enough before it sold.

You might want to try and talk to Jim Crump at Roanoke AI Labs. He has done extensive work with Zebra AI.

I have tried several times, unfortunately he is not willing to give out any info to the public. I find this typical with almost all Zebra breeders I have came across.

Thanks Chris! I just found a equine reproduction specialist a few hours away from me and she has worked with zebras in the past with collecting. I am spending a whole day with her this weekend! excited!

Hi Everyone. I just got back from the equine specialist clinic, she was so knowledgeable and willing to help!! Learned a lot and have lots more to learn. I think I am going to take my stallion there for a month, she said she can teach him how to collect off the dummy. She has lots of experience with zebras, and other exotics, has been collecting and AIing Elk lately! So I think I found the right place to take my boy. She said she will teach me everything there is to know about collecting and preparing the semen. Even said I could come spend a few days following her around. =) Finally after 8 yrs of owning my Zebra I have found someone to help me!
