Jos-I am infusing a mare with Genamycin(sp?)for possible bacterial infection and mostly as a precautionary prophylactic treatment prior to breeding this yr. How soon after my 3rd day of infusion can I breed without any negative affects on the semen. Thanks
Are you buffering the Gentamycin? If not, you will have a severe uterine/vaginal/perineal/back leg scald and not be able to breed this cycle (or possibly the next).
If you are buffering, presuming that the stallion has sperm that are compatible with Gentamycin and that the mare has no clearance issues, you should be OK to breed the day after the last flush.
Be aware that infusing a mare "for possible bacterial infection" can result in a superinfection of the uterus with an opportunistic organism such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Yeast. One should only ever treat a specifically identified pathogen which has a known sensitivity to the antibiotic being used.
Thanks for answering my question, and the added advice is always appreciated as well. Yes, it's buffered
