Has anyone reported detrioration of semen that has been subjected to xray imaging at airports when taken on-board aircraft as hand luggage? I have googled but unable to locate any data on this topic.

Check out the research by Gary England done in 1995:

England G.C.W., Keane M.; (1995) The effect of x-radiation upon the quality and fertility of stallion semen; Theriogenology 46:1 173-80.

The final line of the abstract reads:

"These findings indicate that the exposure of stallion spermatozoa to x-radiation up to doses of 10 µSv does not have deleterious effects upon spermatozoal motility, morphology, longevity or fertility. The exposure received during examination using an x-ray security screening system is likely to be lower than this dose."

Spoke to someone high up in our Aviation Security Organization in NZ who reports the levels of radiation are so low they will have no effect. Also stated that pathological specimens are regularly carried on flights and go thru the normal passenger screening tests with no reported damage.

But what about all this security, and taking a liquid on-board? Did you need some special paperwork for this? How did you bring it through (container, cooling bricks, etc.)?

There's no restriction on liquids if the baggage is checked. It's only liquids in carry-on baggage that is restricted.
