My friends computer is down so I'm asking this for her.
She has a 12 year old paint mare with COPD. She wants badly o breed this mare as she has a wonderfull temperment, build, and pedigree, but she is unsure if the COPD will cause any problems. The mare has had several foals in the past and the previous owner said that she never had a problem with COPD- is there a coralation with that and her being a broodmare?
If it shouldn't be a problem to breed this mare when is it best to breed her and what problems could go along with her being pregnant with it. We live in Florida btw.
There really is no "general" rule on COPD and breeding. In some cases, mares actually improve while pregnant, while in others they get worse.
You can discuss it with the veterinarian, who may be able to evaluate the mare and give an opinion based solely on that mare's condition, but even then it will probably be a bit of a "crap shoot".
