I have a mare that was in foal, but absorbed sometime in that last two weeks. Her Progestrogene was 1.6 so we had her on Reguamate. Well she didn't check in foal so Now we took her off 45 day post last breeding day rechecked her two days later to confirm no preganancy. She has a 5mm folical and super soft cervix but wont' accept the stallion (because we fooled her prior with regumate I am assuming) I don't have any extender on site, but do have a mare that I can use as a dummy and collect off.. Can I just collect and immediately inseminate w/o and extender?
Mares can and do produce follicles without being in estrus ("heat") and breeding on a diestrus follicle is a recipe for disaster. It is therefore essential to confirm that she is in estrus. A good indicator for this is the presence of uterine edema per ultrasound. The relaxed cervix is a good indicator as well, but I would like to be sure with the edema presence...
5 mm? Or 5 cm? If it really is 5 mm, then that is not indicative of a breedable follicle. 5 cm potentially would be.
One can - although it is not overly desirable - breed using raw semen if you do it very rapidly after collection. Make sure of avoiding cold or heat shock of the semen as well in the event that ambient temperatures are not hospitable to semen.
