Thoroughbred stallions often get a lot of "action" so to speak in a day LOL. My friend and I were talking and we realized that her farm had sent a mare to a certain stallion around 1:30pm and than I shipped a mare to the same stallion just over 2 hours later?! Is it possible or realistic to expect that the stallion could replentish his sperm bank so quickly? Normally I get to see a sample under the microscope but unfortunately I did not get to today so I don't know if he had good motility or numbers. Incidently my mare was jumped by the stallion and he bred her twice in a row?! What a libido!! Do you think he put anything of quality in either mare? Thanks
There will be tremendous individual variation between stallions. With some stallions, breeding several mares a day will not be an issue; with other stallions it is a major issue.
Remember that one only needs 100 million sperm to achieve good pregnancy rates, and the average ejaculate is going to contain somewhere upwards of 2 billion, and although those numbers will be depleted if the stallion is breeding a lot, it is unlikely in most cases to drop below 100 million.
Libido is probably the bigger issue in most cases.
