I am very new to breeding and have a few questions. Can Lutalyse be used at any time, and how many cc's do you give (also is it sub q or IM?)?

It needs to be used at least 6 days post ovulation. You give 2 mls IM.

Jennifer you can also use 2 doses of .2cc 24 hrs apart. The advantage of the micro dose is not having the side affects you get with the larger dose. It is much easier on the mare.

Prostaglandin can be given either sub-cue or IM. "Lutalyse" (a brand of prostaglandin) is labelled for use sub-cue in Canada, and IM in the USA - same product, different site!

As noted you can use 1/10th of the standard dose 2 days in row and avoid the unpleasant side effects for the mare - but if you happen to be using Cloprostenol ("Estrumate") which is a synthetic PGF2a then you need only use a single 1/10th dose.

PGF2a will not work all the time, or with accuracy as to when estrus commences - read the article on this site entitled I Gave My Mare Prostaglandin, But It Didn't Work! (aka Why Prostaglandin Use May Not Result In Estrus In Mares) - it should help you understand it a lot better.
