A stallion's penis "bells" at the head following penetration. If he withdraws his penis and it is still enlarged is this a sign that he has not ejaculated? There was flagging of his tail. This was live cover.

When my stallion does that (rarely tho) I allow him to remount after bringing him back to the barn then back to the mare again.

It is neither a sign that he has or hasn't ejaculated, as the glans bells prior to ejaculation, and does not reduce in size again until after ejaculation.

Flagging of the tail is a more reliable indicator, but even that is not 100%! The only way to know for sure is to visualise sperm in the ejaculate - and no, the post-ejaculatory dismount sample is not reliable for that, as if the stallion has a high gel fraction, there may not be any sperm evident as they will have been "washed" through the tract by the gel.

Semen collection (followed of course by AI) is really the only consistently reliable method of knowing for sure.

HELP JOS!-
This is a first for my 16 year old stallion. We have been breeding live and AI for 11 years. Last week he was collected AI and ejaculated no problem.
The first time he covered a live mare was today. When he withdrew from the mare his penis was still "belled" and there was some fluid discharge. He has never had an enlarged penis at withdrawl, usually it is flaccid when he is "done". The footing was slippery today and the mare was "kicky" with a foal at foot. She did seem to be in season however. I thought I saw flagging. We bred twice 10 minutes apart because this is something new to us. Even after reading the above I wonder why this happened for the first time.

There are 3 portions to an ejaculate:
  • Pre-ejaculate (the clear fluid that drips from the penis before breeding/collection);
  • The sperm-rich portion (self-explanatory);
  • The tail-fraction (this consists of the seminal plasma and gel - if gel is present).
If you see fluid dripping from the penis after intromission, it is almost certainly (but not absolutely!) tail-fraction, and the sperm-rich fraction is in the mare!

Evaluate his behaviour after this happens - does he behave like he's ejaculated? That can tell you a lot...

Why did it happen? Well, the footing may well have had something to do with it, and the fact that the mare was less than polite would also preciptitate a defensive behaviour (read "let's get the heck outa here as fast as we can before she nails me!!!" :-) ).

Unless you start to see poor pregnancy rates, or it gets worse, I wouldn't be too concerned.
