Ok...I have a friend who said she can tell that one of my mares IS bred....and one is NOT bred...by the smell of their urine. Is this true? Both mares are 15 days today. We will do ultrasounds on Friday...but I was just curious if there could be any truth to what she is saying.

She's doing better than many stallions if she can...!

There is most definitely a difference in urine odour between the estrus mare and the diestrus or anestrus mare, but I'd have to be pretty skeptical about a pregnant mare - especially at 15 days when there are no huge hormonal differences between a non-pregnant, diestrus mare, and a pregnant one...

And in case she is going by the estrus urine smell change, remember that some mares that are pregnant will still show estrus - so what does that smell like to her?? :-)
