We are planning to start breeding our mares in late April/03. Would you recommend any vitamin supplements that would help them "get ready" for the breeding season. I am told that beta-carotene is supposed to help.
Be VERY careful with vitamins and supplements - a little goes a long way. You can literally poison them with too much. Most mares don't need anything at the beginning besides good hay and feed. You don't want them in fat condition - mares tend to conceive faster if they are in a gaining condition (don't make them skinny!! Just don't want them obese.) Sometimes supplements are needed in the last 3 months and on, if the feed/hay is average quality. Best to talk to your vet - show him what you are feeding, he could then tell you if you need to balance something.
