Hi Everyone,

What is your opinion on vaccinating foals? What age should they be vaccinated? Is it safe to give a 5 way or is a 4 way better? I gave my mare only the 5 way for pre foaling vaccines so what age would be best to start my filly. I would like to give her the regular 4 or 5 way, strangles, and west nile. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,
Brittany

Strangles, rabies, east nile, west nile, rhino is what my vet recommends...but not till 5 or 6 months...if they're not leaving the property. If they're going out for shipping or show, she will start them earlier

Thank you. How much earlier do you start them on their shots because I plan on showing my filly when she is approx 5 1/2 to 6 months old?

Vaccinating a foal is based entirely on if the mare was vaccinate in the last 4-6 weeks of her pregnancy.
If she was the first dose of most vaccines is at 5-6 months. If not they should start at 3-4 months. The big difference is for influenza. If not vaccinated start at 6 months. If the mare was vaccinated do not give before 9 months.

Thank you Cathy. I am just concerned because I have a couple of futurities lined up for my filly and she will be 6 months old. She needs to be vaccinated before I take her out. I am assuming it will be ok to give her the west nile and strangles as I did not give those to my mare as prefoaling vaccines. All I gave her was the 5 way. What would happen if you give them the shots sooner than 6 months of a vaccinated mare? I am still learning. This is my second foal and my first was born 6 years ago. I don't want to do her harm but I also want her to be covered before we go out to show. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You may find this link helpful: http://www.aaep.org/images/files/FoalVaccinationchart409.pdf

I copied it from the American Association of Equine Practitioners. They have a "Guidelines" page on their website with lots of helpful information regarding vaccinations, but this was specifically for foals.
