Hi All,

I have been reading this board for quite some time and am finally able to participate as a breeder.

Today I found out my mare is 15 days pregnant!

The vet who did the ultrasound apparently gave her too much xlazine and reversed the effects with yohimbine. I can't imagine my vet would do anything contraindicated to the pregnancy, but I could use some reassurance about the use of yohimbine in particular as being safe for the little conceptus.

Is there something I should be watching for? She seems fine now.

Thank You!

Yohimbine is not widely or commonly used in routine veterinary medicine and there appears to be no data available on teratogenicity or contraindications of use during early pregnancy.

Looks like you're going to be on a "wait and see" schedule... Let us know what you find at the next check!

Thanks for the reply Jos. That's pretty much all I could find on-line as well. I've decided I'm not going to make myself crazy with this - this vet is very experienced with repro work and breeds many of his own mares, so I am going to trust that it will all be okay.

I will definitely update at the 30-day check, though!

Welcome, new breeder. Hope your mare is still prego at day 30. Keeping fingers crossed for you.

Just thought I would update: My mare had an absolutely perfect filly just after midnight Monday morning! IgG was 1953 and all is well as of this moment. The rest of the pregnancy was uneventful and my worry about the Yohimbine seems to be unfounded - one dose clearly didn't have an impact.
