Ok, I'd like to know (aside from fescue) what would be reason for not bagging up? I have 3 mini mares due in March, all have foaled before, and none of them have any sign of an udder. I thought it was my hay, so I switched the March mares to a new hay. I went to the barn this morning, and the maiden mare at 277 days is beginning to bag up. Are there other reasons, aside from fescue toxicity that a mare would not produce milk? The ones i am concerned about have all bagged several weeks in advance in the past...and one of them is at day 326 and on domperidone. Should I assume that since the maiden is bagging, it is not the hay, and take her off the domperidone?
Thanks in advance

I should really reword that.....the maiden mare is NOT one of the mares I switched hay for. She is still on the old hay, and is NOT on domperidone....the amre at 326 is. This maiden is due April 22.....and is on the old hay i *thought* was endophyte fescue.....

Diana, I of course can't help you here, but I hope someone has some ideas.

Until you posted, I had not given it much thought, but one of my mares does not have much of a udder. She will be 340 days on the 20th of this month. Started me wondering.

I'll be following this thread to see if you learn what the problem is. I hope it gets answered.

This must be so frustrating for you Diana. I'm not sure I've any other answers either, maybe they are just taking a little longer this year?

No answers here either! I have three mares due in three weeks... two are multipara's, one is a maiden. NO bags on any mare out there even thinking about starting up. A maiden mare doens't surprise me, but an older mare does surprise me. Every year it's something new to worry ourselves silly over!!!!

My buckskin mare Katie has now started the tiniest beginnings of an udder....here's hoping all goes as it should. The other mare who's hay was switched has still not started one. She usually foals at 316/315, and she's at 303 today...so we wait
