Hi all. I thought this would be a good place to post about our foals that have already been born this year. I've been working alot of hours and haven't been on here much lately, but wanted to post some updated pics of Jetta. She is getting so big. How is everyone else's foals doing? Cindy and Judy how are your boys doing? http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa97/mollytomale-photos/0504081947a.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa97/mollytomale-photos/0504080743.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa97/mollytomale-photos/0427081925.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa97/mollytomale-photos/0504081944.jpg

chenoa is doing really good,i just love him,he is so friendly and follows me around, sometimes gets in the way,oh well.Charlene i put a post in a different spot about mares after foaling haveing a better chance of getting a twisted gut,my friends mare had a foal 5 weeks ago and died this week end of a twisted gut from rolling, she said you shouldnt let them roll if you can help it because of all the extra room they have in there after foaling, have you herd of this before??????MAN i guess you can nerver stop worrying.

Thanks CJ and Judy. Judy that is terrible, and no I have never heard of that happening to anyone's mare before. Was she rolling because she was actually colicking, or just because?Baby has lost alot of weight, has Dice lost any weight? Baby was 1079lbs before Jetta was born, and tonight I weight taped her at 974lbs. How did she look to you in the 3rd pic I posted eariler? I'm feeding her 9lbs of hay am & pm, half orchard grass and the other half alfalfa. I also am feeding her 2# am & pm of the LMF Development. How much are you feeding Dice? Have you heard from Cindy recently?

CHARLENE baby looks good, she never looked like she was to heavy, dice is still a little heavy looking i havent weighed her,but i can tell just by looking at her.i feed her a flake of alfalfa am and pm and give her 1/2 flake orchard grass at lunch time and the other half before i go to bed so she gets about 3 flakes aday. DO YOU RIDE BABY???Do you think that jetta is pulling the weight of baby or because you watch how much she eats??Do they have grass in the pastures to eat during the day?dice doesnt have any grass in the pasture thats why i give her orchard grass at lunch time, iam kinda hopeing chenoa will pull some weight off dice, she needs it.Iam not sure why the mare was rolling,my friend made it sound like she was just scratching not colicky.cindy put a post on today with some new pictures of fate.

Judy I think she lost the weight mostly because of nursing Jetta, but she also isn't getting to graze like she was before Jetta was born. They have a grassy area, but they have it eaten down. It really bothers me that I can't put them in any of my other pastures to graze because the fencing isn't safe. I tried to get my husband to finish fencing the area I have around the barn the whole time Baby was pregnant, but he didn't do it. I haven't ridden Baby yet, and probally won't for awhile. I'm finding it really difficult just to be able to work on halter training Jetta, because my husband isn't real good at handling horses, and if Baby acts up then he gets scared that he'll get hurt. He is afraid of her and she knows it. That thing with your friends mare sounds like it was just a fluke thing, cause if it was more common I think we would have heard about it before now. Do you have any recent pics of Chenoa? How is his halter/leading going?

WOW all the babys are doing so well. Sky is right up with them in his leading and feet. He went on his first outing the other day. We had a realy good indstructor in the area over the weekend and I realy wanted to ride with him. So Swan and Sky were of to the clinic. I know the facility well and they have a nice round pen right in the arena. Sky stayed in their and Swan went to work in the arena. He was a little upset at first but then he settled down and Swan was so happy to be working again. My goal is to get her back to First level by the end of Augest for a big Dressage show in the area. Sky will be weened and hopefuly momma will be ready.

Judy, Chenoa is getting so big. He is such a nice looking colt. I bet your proud. Jetta got her first trim yesterday. She was a very good girl. I guess my picking up her feet almost daily paid off.

Tahra, glad to hear Sky is doing well. I'm hoping to get a round pen soon so that I can do the same thing you are. Did Sky have his first trim yet?

Charlene yes Sky had his first trim. Unfortuntly it was not what I was hoping for. We had to put apoxy toe extenders on him as with all the runing up the hills he had no more toes and was starting to stand over at the knee. To do the apoxy you have to rasp the foot and then put the stuf on. It takes about 2min to dry and with all the prep time it is about 5min per foot without puting it down. He was good for a little bit and then had enough. We had to wrestle him to the ground. He is doing well now with picking up for short periouds so no real damage.

Also everyone should go riding in the pasture or arena with your babys playing around you. The mares seam to enjoy it and you realy get to see how talented your baby is.

Judy, your welcome.

Tahra, that is good he is still picking up his feet for you after that 5 min. per foot ordeal. My shoer said that Jetta had grown more toe than her mom. Isn't that weird?

Charlene, I understand about the difficulty you are having working with Jetta. I don't remember if I saw you posting on "foals respecting you," thread, under the other link (Foaling issues) but there are some suggestions there.

My mare has little grazing too. The pasture is dryed up. So I have to keep her in until after she eats well, or she will stay out in pasture. I can't keep her gate open a lot of the time, cause the goats will go in there.

So I need to get an area of pasture enclosed just for her. Also, she really doesn't want the goats near her baby! So I understand your frustration. It can be hard when spouses aren't horse people!

CJ, thanks for understanding. I just wish I had another area of my pasture fenced with the non-climb horses fence, like the pasture their in now. When I wean Jetta my mare will be able to graze all she wants, but for now she'll just have to live without.

He was staning over in his front end but not much he has grown out of it. and his back hooves had compacted heels he is getting better but still has a long way to go and ALOT of corrective trimming to fix it. He is now 1 month and 16 days old. He has buddied up with my gelding and they run and play all day long he is now in the pasture full time unless we have storms. His mamma is being bred back to a chestnut QH that is 87% foundation for an 09'baby.. Thank you all for your support with this one!

Here's an update on my Saddlebred foal:

Mac (aka "Harlem Heartthrob") is 7 weeks old today. He is SUCH a ham, but he's very smart. He's learning his lessons well, although he definitely has a show horse attitude. He is absolutely a 'people horse'--more so than alot of foals that I've been around before. Here's some updated pictures-

I just love Voodoo and Bailey!

Linda- Yes, I would say that the ears, mane and tail will roan out. My leopard's solid chestnut ears have now roaned and there are spots on his ears. His chestnut mane has roaned except for the spots in there, and his tail also except for a spot. The chestnut color in his armpits and at the stifle are pretty much gone. He is in his second season of shedding.

I will probably post a picture on the yearling thread after he is buffed and puffed for a show on the 28th. He did not inherit the thin appy mane and I have to do some pulling and cutting for the banding. He has a fab tail too.

Thanks Jane, I don't know how Baileys mane and tail will turn out. Both his sire and dam have the short mane & tail, luckly they are not real thin, just dont grow real long. Bailey's dam is out of a AQHA mare and the stud was a red/wht lepoard like Bailey.
Here are pics of Bailey's dam and sire.

CA make sure she has access to a salt lick...I don't think it will hurt her any, I think you are in the foothills and not the beach in San Diego right? We went to the fair on Saturday to take my grandaughter to see the Doodle Bops :-) Thought of you and your girls. Horses are fine in fact my mare helped my son pop the question this weekend :-)

what a cute proposal! And babys eat dirt and poop all the time. I'd only be concerned if you started having signs of sand colic. And my little dirt eaters have psyllium added to their diets! I feel they're safer that way. But even one of my prego mares does it....it's no big deal

All of the babies are so cute!! Debra I really like your mare- buckskins are one of my favourite colours!!. A while ago on this thread Charlene asked me if I have any foals- unfortunately we lost both of our foals in 2007. The first mare got colic about 10 weeks of foaling and the poor little colt was stillborn. A palomino or cremello. The second mare we think is a carrier for a heart defect which is past on to her colts/foals. Her second colt that we know of died of it and we think thats what happened to this colt, the stress of getting up was just to much. Anyway we decided not to rebred them this year

I have a question that I would like everyone's opinion on. I have a grey mare only about 14hh that I am considering breeding. There is two stallions that I have in mind.
1.What looks to be a peach dun QH or QH/ Arabx beautiful movement, is only a little bit taller than my mare
2. A bay Andulusian stallion registered, said to be at least 16hh maybe taller!

I haven't spoken to anyone yet, I doubt I really have the money to do this BUT if money wasn't an issue who would you choose?
Okay. My mare is a maiden and quite small and the peach stallion would be more her size, and would have a smaller foal, which would be easier for her. On the other hand, because she is small, I want her foal to be larger, and the bay's foal would definately be larger! The peach stallion's owner lives a few houses down the road, so I could ride my mare there, eliminating transport costs, while the bay is further away, but still close by.

This is all probably just hypothetical but I'd still love your opinions!!!

Beth do you have pictures of the stallions and your mare? It would be nice to see what your mare might be lacking and what the stallion has to improve upon it. What breed is your mare?

Here's some pictures of my colt, he's 3 weeks old. OH, we changed his name too. We had named him Flash but my sons started calling him Wally and it stuck so introducing (again) Wally :-)

There's a new movie coming out called Wall-E so I think the commercial has stuck with them!

He is very smart and sweet too, he's got a very cute personality and we're just having a blast with him. I think Tali is already over it though and won't mind when weaning time comes!

Tracy your colt is so pretty! Are him and Tali Arabs? Tobianos are my favourite paint pattern. What type of horse is your stallion? Unfortunately I don't have the right software that lets you post pics right now so I can't put any up, but I'm trying to get it. As for what breed my mare is- I brought, well more like rescued, her from a trader who wasn't very nice and I suspect was a bit shady when she was about 18 months old. There must have been literally hundreds of horses crammed into the yards, shetlands and shires and anything and everything in between. She's at least part Arab, and the way her neck is getting all muscled up I wouldn't be surprised if there was some Andalusian there too. She's not a solid horse- very slim and fine boned, sometimes her solid neck looks a bit out of place! I can not wait to get this software!!

congratulations Tracy!!! I am so happy for you!.

Good luck to you Marilyn, are you getting your mares ultrasound on Wednesday?. You must be very busy and excited between getting them pregnant and Tali being about to foal...that would certanly be too much for me to handle.. I would be in the nuts farms...
I donīt know how you girls deal with having more than a mare and still being able to deliver personalyzed (sp?) caring attention to each one.

Great news Tracy and good luck to you Marilyn! I am so jealous of you guys! I really want foals too but they'll be none this year I afraid. I'm trying to save up to get some more younger mares as most of ours are over 20 years old. Best wishes to everyone who has pregnant mares and foals!
