Does anyone have any experience with these little buggers?

I have them in my hay. I thought I had scabies. Doc said no. My husband helped me in the barn to move some hay and he got bit. I did some research on line and figured out what I have.

From what I read I just have to live with them a little longer until it frosts. Does anyone know if they will be back in the spring?

Jane, I have never heard of straw itch mites before. Let me know what you end up finding out, crazy.

I guess no one else has either. I was happy in thinking I had a bunch of good hay for the winter...and it was not that much $ back at first cuting. Figures.

Woody has bites too I believe, in his mane. He has various welts within the mane. I put fly roll on in there today, and will monitor him and see. This is the first year that I can't wait for the first frost.

You might want to talk to your vet about using Ivermectin - possibly the pour-on version which can be somewhat more systemic - as that might help get you through to the first frost. I've seen good results treating horses with mange using that.

OK. I will call them. Thanks.
I have a friend I spoke to today who is having trouble with her horses manes and tails this season, who had the same rash as I do...

I will call my vet tomorrow because yes, Woody has a strange skin thing on his chest. He also has various stages of pimple-like swellings along his mane. He has one very big...approx 2cm nodule..within his mane at his crest area. I will end up having to take him there, I guess. He may have a boil/infection there with mange on his chest. It is always something. I have to work this evening as well as mon and tues evening. I really should be out there with hot emsom salts soaks and some iodine shampoo.

Anyway, I got more hay yesterday. I asked the farmer if he has ever heard of them, thinking he has the problem himself. He said no, that he has never been bit.

Needless to say, we used bug spray while handing the hay today. No problems.
