Hi; We have a call in talk show in my home town and I made a comment on a constant shooting range could cause a mare to absorb the baby....and I have become the laughing stock of the community...could anyone tell me where I could get some concrete evidence to save face?I would appreciate any help! Thanks; Cyn
Sorry to say, you will probably have to wear the egg. Unless she is constantly on the run and frenzied, most mares adapt pretty quickly to strange/upsetting noises, and don't usually miscarry just because something startles them. Miscarriages/absorptions usually occur for other reasons like twins, genetic problems in the foal, uterine infections, severe colic/founder, overwork (exhaustion), etc.
If the mare is in a constant state of panic, this could be a contributing factor.
Some horses are more sensitive to auditory input then others. I have had a hyper sensitive mare that I had to stuff her ears with cotton, then adjust to less as she became desensitised.
