Im Wondering if there are any studies on how much Regumate you have to give ( Equine Reg with 2,2mg/ml)a mare to delay Ovulation, for example when a customer brings you a mare with( the famous,no we didnt see any heat..and she SHOULD not be in heat before next.....)45 soft foll.And you have to order semen from another Breeding Facillity ?? Is it the same amount youd give a mare to maintain Pregnancy or more and does this really work! Are there studies that proof Regumate can delay Ovulation and how are conception Rates of regumate delayed ovulation mares.How long was the longest attempt to delay ovulation on a soft follicel? There are no published studies that I am aware of. We have in the past used a double-dose to attempt to delay ovulation, and it has worked at times... and not at others. We have also used estradiol cypionate (ECP), which has been successful. Then a few years ago in a sudden moment of inspiration, I realised that as either Regumate (a progestin) or ECP (estrogen) worked with mixed results, combining the two may be even more beneficial, and we did a small controlled study using P&E in what we deemed (by ultrasound) to be pre-ovulatory mares where we would expect to see an ovulation within the next 24 hours. Every one of the treated mares (we gave the equivalent of the regular daily dose) delayed ovulation by at least 24 hours, ovulating in the 24-48 hour period rather than the earlier anticipated timing. The control group of mares (no P&E) mostly ovulated within 24 hours. We did not present this work for publication, but we do now use P&E to delay ovulation if we need to!
I have a mare that is just coming into season and my stallion will be gone for 5 days. Can I use the P and E therapy on her now to delay ovulation or should I wait. If I can what would be the protocol?
You can try and use P&E. We have found that once the mare is in estrus ("heat") a single dose of P&E will tend to delay ovulation by one day, so you can try and delay her using 5 doses, or probably a better option is to simply start her on the whole P&E protocol and plan on breeding in 18 days.
