Hello! I was wondering if anyone has had a problem with mares getting a local reaction at the site of the P & E injections. I am trying it on my own mare prior to recommending it to my clients & my mare is getting local swelling at the site of every injection & is quite sore. The P & E (from Bet Pharm) is being drawn up aseptically on a daily basis. I am rotating injection sites, but am running out of good places (I am on day 5). I am treating them with hot compresses. This is a chestnut mare who tends to be reactive to things like fly bites, etc., so I don't kow if it is just her, or a common reaction. Would 2 separate injections of the P4 & the estrogen work better, or is the carrier the same? Perhaps in the future, I might try the oral form with this mare. I don't want to quit now though, because I am dodging the stallion's show schedule & we are late in the season. Any suggestion would be helpful. I am using a 22g, 1 in. needle. I found that the P & E wouldn't go through the insulin needle, as had been suggested.
Thanks, Muffy

Use locations below the mid-line if you are not already doing so. These will include the chest muscles and the thigh below the point of rump.

You should be using at the smallest a 20 x 1½ needle, and preferably an 18 x 1½ gauge. I'm not sure who recommended the insulin syringe - but that most decidedly won't work! We use insulin syringes for oxytocin and prostaglandin, but they are small molecule drugs, P&E and the cottonseed oil carrier are not! If you get the drug deeper in the muscle, you will probably see less of a reaction (I can't imagine how hard it is to get it to go through a 22 gauge needle!!! :-))

We don't particularly recommend the oral product, as the products compounded in the US to date have not shown good reliability at timely estrus induction and ovulation pinpointing.
