I am considering putting my 14 year old QH gelding on Regumate to control his urge to mount and penetrate my QH mare. He shows all the stallion like behavior, his mind just is not on riding when were out on a trail, and coming home he can be such a booger bear about walking, taking his time, he wants to jig and dance, no patience.
Has anyone else done this? I work with him on this all the time, trying to keep his mind off of what he thinks he is suppose to be doing. I even seperated him this time, putting in my quiet Percheron mare with him. She too is in heat and he did sniff and nudge her but as soon as she presented herself to him he walked away, he wants my QH mare!
Last year when he got bad, to the point he was a bit beligerant, I seperated him from the girls. He got so frantic one afternoon that he colicked on me badly and I really worried I would loose him. Vet said he got himself into a lather over not being with them, pacing the fence line and not drinking. So now, I watch him even closer and that is why I put my Perch mare in there, she is so easy going and laid back. He doesn't seem so worried like he was.
Anyone use Regumate on their gelding? I don't know when he was gelded, my friend who raised and trained him and the other QH, his sister, said that it was young, but who knows what the other owner used him for or did with him after she sold him to her.
Any suggestions and ideas would be helpful. Thanks.
