I have a stallion in April he will be 4 years old.
2010 from July to January 2011 the trainer had him on regumate...he was never BAD no kicking, no rearing, no striking but a little bit on the mouthy side (but no more then all uncut colts are). He is retiring now to the breeding farm. Will this cause him problems at the stud farm? how long does it take to get out of the system? I am afraid it may cost him in the fertility dept. Should I be worried?

Yes, you should be worried.

There is no doubt that it will impact short-term fertility, reducing libido and sperm output. What is not clear is how long this impact will be in effect. There is some suggestion that it may have a permanent effect when used in young stallions, while in other cases there seems to have been little long-term impact. This suggests that (a) it could be stallion variable; and/or (b) there hasn't been enough conclusive research done to give a definitive answer. It's why we strongly dissuade people from using a female hormone in a male horse... :-(

All we can really say at this point is "good luck" and let us know how you make out!

Thanks Jos, I was not told he was on Regumate until I told the trainer he was being transferred to the breeding farm. :-( I hope it has not caused the problems you mentioned!

well, looks like the regumate did nothing to him, he has been collected a couple of times and semen looks good so we are a go!

The biggest impact that is seen is in total sperm numbers, so although motility may be fine, that is the set of figures you should be keeping a close eye on. Hopefully he's squeaked through the cracks though, and is fine!! :-)
