Hello, Bred my mare June 15 on a 40mm, gave a shot of HCG. Mare started showing sign of heat to gelding June 30th. Checked for pregnancy by Ultra sound July 4th, difficult to see-poor image. Some edema, no fluids, one big CL on an ovary and a 30mm follicule on the other. Cervix closed but not tight. Question is: vet suggest a shot of prostaglandin, ordering the semen and in 24 hours giving a shot of HCG to mature the 30mm along. I'm just wondering, what if she is pregnant and they did not find it because of poor resolution? She would be 19 days along or so. Anything else I can do to figure it out? I have to make a descision by tomorow morning for the semen because shipping on friday will not work for me. Stallion is in the US I'm in Canada. Thanks Veronique
hCG will not reliably induce ovulation unless there is a 35 mm follicle present;
Follicular presence does not indicate non-pregnant;
About 10% of pregnant mares show estrus;
Pregnancies do get missed per ultrasound;
Giving PGF2a now will definitely destroy a pregnancy if there is one there;
Ultrasound is the only reliable way of determining pregnancy status at this stage, with the possible exception of vaginal inspection of the cervix, which if relaxed indicates estrus (and if it's relaxed she's not going to be pregnant anyway). Some mares however will not have a relaxed cervix and still not be pregnant.
Can't really tell you more than that...
